SUMMARY:Abingdon Drama Club Presents 'A Christmas Carol' - Matinee
DESCRIPTION:by Charles Dickens\, Adapted by David Edgar \n\n\n\n\n\nDirected by Susi Dalton \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a ghostly Christmas night as cold-hearted businessman Ebenezer Scrooge (Adam Blake) faces the fright of his life\, uncovers the truth about himself\, and learns to love his neighbour \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis adaptation by David Edgar of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol reawakens the social conscience of this timeless tale. Through time jumps\, we witness Scrooge’s past\, explore the present around him\, and confront the shocking future that awaits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll the beloved characters are present\, with a unique twist that delves into the parliamentary reports of the 1840s on issues like abolishing rotten boroughs and establishing workhouses\, highlighting Dickens’ keen awareness of societal issues. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirected by the talented Susi Dalton\, this clever and engaging adaptation is brought to life on the Unicorn stage by Abingdon Drama Club. Edgar has reinvented this quintessentially Victorian story\, featuring Dickens himself (Terry Atkinson) narrating alongside his editor and friend\, John Forster (Kieran Madden). The play opens with Dickens grappling to write another book on poverty and child labour\, as Forster suggests this may be too grim for a Christmas audience. Together\, they construct the narrative before our eyes\, offering a fascinating insight into Dickens’ creative process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I love exploring different interpretations of well-known classics. I previously directed another unique version of A Christmas Carol\, and I chose David Edgar’s adaptation to embrace new challenges and enrich the original story we all cherish.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I’m excited to direct this version with our wonderful actors\, confident that together we will create a memorable production for Abingdon Drama Club.” \nSusi Dalton\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon’t miss this enchanting performance\, marking the final production in ADC’s 80th Anniversary year! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets available at The Bookstore\, The Abingdon Precinct (15 Bury Street)\, Abingdon or online.

SUMMARY:MATU Presents Katie Spencer
DESCRIPTION:SUPPORT: WEDNESDAY’S WOLVES \n\n\n\n\n\nRaised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull\, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe songwriting\, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell\, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman\, flow into her sound\, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70s folk and songwriter movements. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets can be bought in person from Frend & Co\, 29 Broad St\, Abingdon\, OX14 3LH – £15

SUMMARY:SCOTT DOONICAN : ONE MAN SHOW
DESCRIPTION:An evening of musical comedy with the front-man of the UK’s hardest working comedy band ‘The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican’. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the charismatic frontman of the UK’s hardest-working comedy band\, ‘The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican’\, Scott Doonican is a debonair and theatrical performer with superb hair and more style than you could shake a Milan catwalk at. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a solo performer\, Scott’s ‘Bar-Steward Unplugged’ shows are every bit as funny\, dynamic and engaging as those with his band\, and he is equally at ease in front of large festival crowds\, as he would be in a theatre or down the pub. This is where Scott Doonican the story-teller\, entertainer and showman\, gets the opportunity to take the band’s extensive back-catalogue of comic-songs and perform them\, stripped-back\, on just his battered ‘Workhorse’ acoustic guitar or his little banjulele in his hand. Here\, the Doonicans’ side-splitting song-smithery\, comes to the fore\, often accompanied by with an abundance of cracking yarns\, giving a charming insight to the inspiration behind them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter almost two decades of bringing smiles and belly-laughs to audiences across the UK; from Barnsley to Barnstaple\, from Glasgow to Glastonbury Festival\, Scott continues to wow audiences with a fine selection of The Bar-Steward Sons’ greatest hits\, including the likes of “The Lady In Greggs”\, “How Deep Is Your Glove?”\, “Nandos”\, “Paint ’em Back”\, “Walking In Manpiss” and “If I Could Punch A Face… It’d Be Justin Bieber’s”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith close to 1300 shows under his belt to date\, Scott Doonican is driven by the desire to leave his audiences with a big grin on their faces. He subscribes to the same wise words of his spiritual father\, Val Doonican\, that\, “When you entertain the public\, it’s no good just having good music or singing\, you must also have entertainment value\, so people will go home having a good time”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSo\, can you trust him? To be silly\, yes. To behave\, hell no. Like a bus conductor standing in front of an orchestra with a spoon in one hand and a pint in the other\, Scott Doonican is quite clearly here for a good time\, not a long time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The best thing to come out of Barnsley since the A61 to Sheffield”Jarvis Cocker\, Pulp \n\n\n\n\n\n“Very\, very funny… one of the hardest working acts on the planet.”Mike Harding\, Comedian\, Folk Musician\, Author & Broadcaster \n\n\n\n\n\n“When the North goes independent I am suggesting ‘Too Good To Be Jus’ is our national anthem. Great fun”Jason Manford\, Comedian \n\n\n\n\n\n“A ridiculous\, genius\, hilarious\, irresistible music maker\, currently crowd-surfing to the bar and beyond\, into the venues and music festivals of the UK.”Eliza Carthy MBE\, Folk Musician \n\n\n\n\n\n“An act that you will want to see over and over again. Absolutely hilarious”Dave Pegg\, Fairport Convention

SUMMARY:Open Heritage Days Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to England’s largest festival of history and culture! \n\n\n\nEvery September thousands of volunteers across England organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit the remaining domestic buildings of the medieval Abingdon Abbey – and experience life in Iron Age Abingdon! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThroughout the weekend you will be able to explore the Buildings using our informative leaflet and information paddles. Guided tours will be available on the Sunday at 10.30 and 11.30 am and at 2.30 and 3.30 pm. We will also be showing a short film in the Unicorn Theatre – with a focus on memories of productions in the 60s and 70s. \n\n\n\nThe Saxon Abbey of Abingdon was founded in the 7th century\, sacked by the Danes in the 9th century\, and re-dedicated as a Benedictine monastery in 953. It became one of the most cultured and wealthy monasteries of England and welcomed many royal visitors over the next 500 years\, until being largely demolished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The domestic buildings were sold as commercial premises and over the next 400 years were successively a corn mill\, a brewery and eventually slum dwellings. They were saved from demolition in 1944 by The Friends of Abingdon and after the first 10 years of repair and restoration they opened to the public; they have been open ever since\, but the repair and restoration work continues. More information about the Buildings and their history can be found on our website.

SUMMARY:MATU Presents Natalie Holmes
DESCRIPTION:SUPPORT: GEORGE BOOMSMA \n\n\n\n\n\nDescribed as a consistently astounding songwriter\, Natalie Holmes writes lilting\, haunting and yet somehow invigorating pop\, with honey toned vocals and an incredible depth to every song. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNatalie learnt classical piano from the age of 7\, and with this started writing songs almost immediately. A handful of years later\, her knowledge of music theory led her to pick up the guitar\, ukulele\, and percussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“She writes the kind of tunes that get inside your head and don’t let go.” \nBBC Introducing In The West

SUMMARY:Abingdon Drama Club Presents Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead\, 17th - 20th April
DESCRIPTION:by Tom Stoppard and Directed by Terry Atkinson \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAcclaimed as a modern dramatic masterpiece\, Tom Stoppard’s best known work\, the absurdist tragicomedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead\, gives us much more than skin-deep laughs. It relates the story of two minor characters fromShakespeare’s classic\, Hamlet – the courtiers Rosencrantz (Kieran Madden) and Guildenstern (Chris Bedford) plus the Player (Michael Ward) and the Tragedians (Darren Fellerdale\, Richard Wilson\, Geraldine Hodson\, Laura King\, Erin Sanders and Dave Fardon). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbingdon Drama Club’s excellent production of Stoppard’s classic is performed in the ancient and atmospheric Unicorn Theatre in Abingdon.. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe action takes place mainly “in the wings” of Hamlet\, with brief appearances of the major characters who perform fragments of the original’s scenes. Between various episodes\, our two main characters voice their confusion at the progress of events taking place onstage without them in Hamlet\, of which they have no direct knowledge. Stoppard has managed to make the futility of their actions drive the plot. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is something for everyone in ADC’s production – from the philosophical meanderings of Guildenstern\, to the wonderful slapstick scenes throughout the show. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I love both the main characters – Guildenstern is the cynic\, whereas Rosencrantz is more innocent and wider-eyed about the world”. He continues. “I love comedy and a challenge. Comedy\, I find\, is more difficult to direct than straight dramatic theatre. It’s a cracking idea\, to create a play out of two very minor characters in Hamlet. I love the surrealist humour brought by Stoppard. \n\n\n\nIt’s a fast-paced show with\, in my opinion\, some of the best dialogue ever put on a stage.” \nDirector\, Terry Atkinson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTerry is one of ADC’s most prolific members. He’s presently their chairman and his long list of credits include directing ‘Allo ‘Allo and playing the starring role in Shakespeare’s Henry V. The play was first staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1966. ADC’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead has it all – irony\, tragedy and of course…laughs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGroup Bookings: Groups of 10 and over – All tickets £10 (£10.60 when booked online – just select the concession rate ticket and choose the number you require). SUMMARY:Studio Theatre Company Presents The Magistrate
DESCRIPTION:BY ARTHUR WING PINERO \n\n\n\n\n\nPinero’s classic farcical comedy is a fast-paced\, hilarious tale of confusion and shenanigans. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen amiable magistrate Posket marries widow Agatha\, little does he realise she’s lopped five years off her age – and her son’s. He very quickly finds himself caught up in scandalous events that threaten to disgrace him. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe plan to sell out to the theatre’s capacity. Our Front of House team will do their very best to seat people together but please arrive in good time or this may not be possible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note\, this medieval building does pose challenges for anyone with mobility issues. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Pinero’s cracking Victorian farce!.”
