SUMMARY:Open Heritage Days Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to England’s largest festival of history and culture! \n\n\n\nEvery September thousands of volunteers across England organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit the remaining domestic buildings of the medieval Abingdon Abbey – and experience life in Iron Age Abingdon! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThroughout the weekend you will be able to explore the Buildings using our informative leaflet and information paddles. Guided tours will be available on the Sunday at 10.30 and 11.30 am and at 2.30 and 3.30 pm. We will also be showing a short film in the Unicorn Theatre – with a focus on memories of productions in the 60s and 70s. \n\n\n\nThe Saxon Abbey of Abingdon was founded in the 7th century\, sacked by the Danes in the 9th century\, and re-dedicated as a Benedictine monastery in 953. It became one of the most cultured and wealthy monasteries of England and welcomed many royal visitors over the next 500 years\, until being largely demolished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The domestic buildings were sold as commercial premises and over the next 400 years were successively a corn mill\, a brewery and eventually slum dwellings. They were saved from demolition in 1944 by The Friends of Abingdon and after the first 10 years of repair and restoration they opened to the public; they have been open ever since\, but the repair and restoration work continues. More information about the Buildings and their history can be found on our website.

SUMMARY:Studio Theatre Club Presents The Alchemist
DESCRIPTION:BY BEN JONSON \n\n\n\n\n\nLondon\, 1948 The war has ended and London is slowly trying to return to normal. Rationing is still in full swing and rebuilding after the Blitz has yet to start in earnest. There is a sense of hope in the city but life is hard for many. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn such situations there will always be those looking for a way to get ahead… and also those willing to exploit them. Three enterprising women have set up a thriving business in an empty house\, offering to predict the future\, guarantee success in life and love\, and\, for the most favoured clients\, create the legendary philosopher’s stone. Unfortunately for the trio\, there are those who are not convinced by their schemes and are determined to see them brought to justice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCan they stay one step ahead of the law\, or will it all end in disaster..? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note\, this medieval building does pose challenges for anyone with mobility issues.

SUMMARY:Abingdon Drama Club Presents Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead\, 17th - 20th April
DESCRIPTION:by Tom Stoppard and Directed by Terry Atkinson \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAcclaimed as a modern dramatic masterpiece\, Tom Stoppard’s best known work\, the absurdist tragicomedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead\, gives us much more than skin-deep laughs. It relates the story of two minor characters fromShakespeare’s classic\, Hamlet – the courtiers Rosencrantz (Kieran Madden) and Guildenstern (Chris Bedford) plus the Player (Michael Ward) and the Tragedians (Darren Fellerdale\, Richard Wilson\, Geraldine Hodson\, Laura King\, Erin Sanders and Dave Fardon). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbingdon Drama Club’s excellent production of Stoppard’s classic is performed in the ancient and atmospheric Unicorn Theatre in Abingdon.. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe action takes place mainly “in the wings” of Hamlet\, with brief appearances of the major characters who perform fragments of the original’s scenes. Between various episodes\, our two main characters voice their confusion at the progress of events taking place onstage without them in Hamlet\, of which they have no direct knowledge. Stoppard has managed to make the futility of their actions drive the plot. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is something for everyone in ADC’s production – from the philosophical meanderings of Guildenstern\, to the wonderful slapstick scenes throughout the show. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“I love both the main characters – Guildenstern is the cynic\, whereas Rosencrantz is more innocent and wider-eyed about the world”. He continues. “I love comedy and a challenge. Comedy\, I find\, is more difficult to direct than straight dramatic theatre. It’s a cracking idea\, to create a play out of two very minor characters in Hamlet. I love the surrealist humour brought by Stoppard. \n\n\n\nIt’s a fast-paced show with\, in my opinion\, some of the best dialogue ever put on a stage.” \nDirector\, Terry Atkinson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTerry is one of ADC’s most prolific members. He’s presently their chairman and his long list of credits include directing ‘Allo ‘Allo and playing the starring role in Shakespeare’s Henry V. The play was first staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1966. ADC’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead has it all – irony\, tragedy and of course…laughs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGroup Bookings: Groups of 10 and over – All tickets £10 (£10.60 when booked online – just select the concession rate ticket and choose the number you require). Please let us know if you have any problems with your booking. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAvailable at The Bookstore\, The Abingdon Precinct (15 Bury Street)\, Abingdon or online.

SUMMARY:Half Cut Theatre Company Presents Canterbury Tales
DESCRIPTION:Four tales\, four actors\, many more characters and a handful of songs… \n\n\n\n\n\nTHE SHOW \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, Half Cut Theatre take their loving (but concerningly sharp) hatchet to one of the seminal works of English Literature: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChaucer’s six-hundred-yearold-snapshot-of-mediaevalsociety-in-all-its-filth-andglory\, The Canterbury Tales. SUMMARY:Moonhawk proudly present The Pillowman
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Mike Ward \n\n\n\n\n\nMoonhawk Productions presents The Pillowman\, a jet-black comedy-drama about storytelling\, freedom of speech\, and the responsibility of a writer in a totalitarian state. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWritten by multi-award winning writer and filmmaker Martin McDonagh\, this hilarious\, brutal and thought-provoking play follows Katurian\, a writer of short stories\, who is interrogated by Tupolski and Ariel after deaths described in his stories seem to have been recreated by a real killer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbingdon based Moonhawk welcomes anyone interested in all aspects of theatre production on or backstage. The play will be performed at several locations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirected by Mike Ward\, The Pillowman combines amazing onstage performances with web cam streaming and video footage to visualise the interrogation scenes and the violence\, without putting the actors in real danger. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI caught the drama bug over 10 years ago and have been acting\, directing and stage managing ever since. More recently I’ve entered the world of producing\, hence Moonhawk Productions. We’re based in Abingdon-on-Thames and we use several locations to put on our diverse types of drama. We operate an “open door” policy meaning that anyone can be part of Moonhawk – on stage\, back stage\, production and front of house”. In the summer Leon toured his own solo hit show. \nLeon Witcomb\, Founder\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nI first saw a student production of The Pillowman many years ago\, having known Martin McDonagh’s writing through working on a couple of his Irish plays. The Pillowman at first seems very different in content and structure\, but the fantastic writing for actors and the dark\, dark humour is the same. \nMike Ward\, Director
