Abingdon Abbey Buildings Enhancement Project – a step closer!

Abingdon Abbey Buildings Enhancement Project – a step closer!

In 2022, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and a number of other funders, awarded Abingdon Abbey Buildings Trust a grant to develop detailed plans to preserve and enhance the Abbey Buildings, increase their access and enable more people to visit and enjoy them.

In November 2024, the ‘development phase’ of the Enhancement Project concluded, and the Trust submitted an application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund to make the project a reality.

The anticipated cost of the Enhancement Project is £5.4m.  We have applied to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a grant of £3.7m, and they will make their decision in March 2025.  We have secured all the planning and statutory consents.

This leaves us fundraising in earnest for the £1.7m gap.  We are absolutely delighted to report that we have already secured grants from The Wolfson Foundation, Historic Houses Foundation, Oxfordshire Buildings Trust and Abingdon Town Council which will count towards this target. We are very grateful to all our funders who are so important in helping us make this project happen.

We are currently looking for cornerstone funders – both individuals and trusts who are interested in supporting the project.  Please contact Claire Hamilton:  or the Chair, Gregory Bensberg: , for a no-obligation discussion if you are able to help.
